Abstract

The faculty and instructional design team of Empire State College's Center for Distance Learning have developed a number of innovative online natural science courses. These include both upper and lower level coursework, for majors and non‐majors, and across the spectrum of SMT. Starting less than ten years ago from a distance learning curriculum that was strictly print‐based, we have developed and/or refined a number of pedagogical approaches to maximize student learning by recognizing that a successful online course is one in which three key aspects are met: (1) course content is presented in a pedagogically sound way, (2) instructors are well versed in the appropriate pedagogy and instructional technology, and (3) a community of learners amongst the students is established. During this presentation, we will discuss how these key aspects were addressed in online courses such as Genetics and Evolution: One Long Argument. Similar to the legs of a stool, we will also discuss how these elements are interrelated and critical to the effective design and delivery of online science coursework.
