Abstract

This study looks at the Museum of Chinese America, located in Chinatown, New York City, in which the Chinese American identity is represented through a memory project. The experience of Chinese immigrants in America is understood in 3 sets of tensions. Despite an attempt to create an identity with flexibility and diversity, the making of Chinese American history is still dominated by the national narrative, with the challenges of marginalization of certain subgroups of Chinese immigrants and the “great men” narrative of history. The article suggests that exploring the global scope and the diversified targeted audiences in the museum could facilitate a better understanding of Chineseness in interaction with other migration experiences.
