Abstract
Aim: to detect anemia prevalence and it's etiologic factors in patients living in moderately high altitude in Erzurum. Material and Methods: From February 2002 to October 2002, children between 6 months to 6 years referred to outpatient clinic of were investigated for anemia prospectively. Results: We detected anemia in 148 cases out of 1004 patients. Out of 148 patients who had anemia, 66 cases had iron deficiency anemia (IDA), 46 cases inflamation anemia, 33 cases had both iron deficiency and inflamation anemia, 2 cases fi-thalassemia trait and in 1 patient etiologic factor can't be detected.Out of the 148 patients having anemia 28 cases had malnutrition. Anemia prevalence was found to be 14.7 %, prevalence of IDA was 6.5 %. IDA was more significant in the age group of 6 years. Although prevalence of anemia in developed countries is reported to be 1 %, in this study the prevalence was found to be still high. Conclusion: IDA and inflamation anemia still remains a significant problem for our country.In anemic cases, no correlation was found between severity of anemia and malnutrition,family education level and family income.
