Abstract

Experiments with 65Zn and 35S-labeled rat intestinal cytosol and purified 35S-labeled intestinal zinc-thionein (metallothionein) demonstrate that a low molecular weight zinc-binding complex in rat intestine, detectable by gel filtration chromatography, is a degradation product derived from metallothionein and other zinc-binding proteins. Low molecular weight zinc-binding intestinal complex(es) is (are) also generated by oral zinc loading with high doses.
