Abstract

(1) Conventional chemical analytical techniques were used to determine the nature of the black cecal contents of adult liver flukes. (2) “Alkali hematin” and “hemochromogen” tests applied to liver flukes with cecal contents or to cecal contents alone gave reactions exactly as described for blood. Liver flukes without cecal contents, bile, and bile duct tissue did not give these reactions. (3) On the average, the cecal contents were equivalent to 0.023 ml blood per adult fluke. (4) Comparison of iron and copper contents of blood, bile, bile duct, epithelium, liver, and cecal contents indicated that adult liver flukes are almost exclusively hematophagic.
