Abstract

The internal operations of a children's residential treatment institution are examined in relation to the continuum of care. The client biographical model is used to integrate apparently disparate approaches to the study of client serving organizations by focusing on the longterm goals for the client within an intra-organizational context. Interviews with staff indicated low congruence between institutional sub-goals (discharge criteria) and the major goal of effecting successful individual functioning in the communtiy. Differential interest in client's biography is postulated as the underlying explanation for the low congruence. Implications of the differential emphasis are discussed.
