Organ Donation Educational Package Improves Knowledge and Commitment of Nurses towards Pledging for Organ Donation

Abstract

Nurses’ knowledge and commitment towards pledging for organ donation is important to promote organ donation. This study was carried out to (i) assess the knowledge of nurses regarding organ donation, (ii) develop and administer the educational package for nurses, (iii) assess its effectiveness on knowledge and commitment of nurses towards pledging for organ donation. A quasi-experimental study was conducted on 149 nurses (75 in experimental and 74 in control group) working in selected wards of a tertiary care institute of north India. Pre-test questionnaire was administered in both the groups. E ducational package was developed and administered in the experimental group. After 1 week, post-test was taken in both the groups and donor cards were used to assess their commitment. Baseline knowledge of nurses in both the groups was similar. There were significant differences between the experimental and control group post-intervention. Improvements were observed in the median knowledge scores of nurses (P <0.001) and their willingness to pledge for organ donation (P <0.001). Significant differences were noted between donor cards filled by them (P = 0.0006).Organ donation educational package is effective in improving knowledge and commitment of nurses towards pledging for organ donation .
