Abstract

An acute inflammatory condition that affects the skin and mucosa, erythema multiforme is caused by a cell-mediated immune response. This paper reports the case of a patient diagnosed with erythema multiforme. A 29-year-old male patient reported pain in the mouth and throat lesions. During intraoral examination the presence of erosive and ulcerated lesions was noted, with erythematous coloration, disseminated, diffuse limits, irregular format, hemorrhagic and ulcerated surface in the buccal mucosa, soft palate, and lateral border of the tongue. Incisional biopsy was performed. Histopathology revealed a parakeratinized epithelium with hyperplasia, acanthosis, hydropic degeneration, focal exocytosis, and ulcers covered with fibrinous exudate. The lamina propria of fibrous connective tissue was permeated by intense mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate. The conclusion was a chronic nonspecific inflammatory process with perivascular disposition, confirming the diagnosis of erythema multiforme. Total remission was obtained with prednisolone 20 mg for 30 days without relapse for 3 years.
