Abstract
Caries is a multifactorial disease caused by the interaction of consecutively favored factors in adolescence, which motivates its onset and progression. The objective of the present study was to know the oral hygiene habits and dental caries index of adolescents users of the family health strategy of the municipality of Umirim-CE. Sixty adolescents were selected per convenience sample. Information on oral health, dental hygiene and socioeconomic level were collected through a structured questionnaire and oral conditions were evaluated through the indices International Caries Detectionand Assessment System (ICDAS). Regarding oral hygiene habits, 87% (n = 52) had a daily brushing habit, 85% (n = 51) did not use dental floss daily and 35% (n = 21) answered the last visit to the dentist they had gone to the dentist. A total of 194 dental elements were analyzed in which a large index was presented for the score 5 (8% n = 15) and 6 (12% n = 24), which detected a higher severity of the caries disease. It was verified that there is a low quality of oral hygiene and oral health conditions of the participants who demonstrated a high percentage of caries, dismantling the necessity of the implementation of oral health promotion programs.
