Abstract

In this paper a modification of the Ritz method is presented for finding optimum boundaries in which the Laplace or the Poisson equation is known to hold. The method developed utilized the classical calculus of variations to determine candidates for optimum boundaries. The method is applied to obtain the optimum tooth shape for maximum torque of a magnetic exciter used on a resonant stepping mechanism.
