Abstract

Due to the higher prevalence of sensory impairments and cognitive deficits in the geriatric age group, the therapist has to ensure if the patient understands the questions and the implications of a psychiatric referral to enhance cooperation from the patient. Depending on the cultural context, patients may minimize or under-report psychiatric illnesses, considering them part of normal ageing. Older adults might associate having depressive illness with feelings of shame, which results in under-reporting of psychopathology in the geriatric age group. A geriatric case usually presents with complex intertwined social issues. Psychological factors like ongoing interpersonal disputes in the family, financial struggles or recent loss of a family member can exacerbate the patient’s medical or psychiatric illness. The Helping Older People Experience Success (HOPES) model is an integrated health management program specifically developed to improve psychosocial functioning and to reduce the medical needs of older persons with serious mental illness.
