Abstract

Abstract Pre-laying of anchors is an efficient method for anchor handling in regions with narrow weather windows like in the North Sea area. Still, time is needed to connect the pre-laid anchors to the rigs. Normally, in advance of rig arrival the anchor chain on the sea bed is grappled for connection of the chain to a buoy. This grappling operation will normally disturb the sea bed surface and can harm potential coral colonies. Furthermore, when a surface buoy is connected it is normally required to use a guard boat to hinder collision between buoys and other marine traffic. In order to improve the time efficiency of the anchor handling, to prevent the buoy from being run over by general marine traffic and to minimise any environmental impacts a new type of buoy is introduced. This buoy is remotely operated and will until activated stay close to the sea bed on conventional applications, or close to an artificial sea bed on ultra deep water applications. On activation the buoy will uncoil a soft line slowly until the buoy reaches the sea surface for pick up. By the use of this buoy there is no need for grappling.
