Abstract

We have prepared Fe3B/Nd2Fe14B bulk nanocomposite magnets at the Nd-poor composition of Nd4.5Fe77B18.5 using a spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique, and the influences of the sintering time and the SPS current on the magnetic properties as well as the grain size were investigated. The highest maximum energy product is achieved when the grain size is the smallest on condition that the crystallization of amorphous phase is completed. Excellent magnetic properties i.e., coercivity Hcj = 248 kA/m, remanence polarization Jr = 1.24 T, maximum energy product BHmax = 81 kJ/m3 are obtained for the sample prepared with the sintering time of 14.6 sec and the SPS current of 1050A. The microstructure of the optimized magnet shows a fine structure with the average grain size of ∼35 nm.
