Abstract

In this paper we examine the conditions under which a rectangular grating may have its zeroth order of diffracted light completely suppressed, yielding approximately 41% output efficiency into each first order. We show that the higher orders will always be present in any grating with discrete bars, and thus that the above condition is also optimal in an important sense. Other equally important optimization conditions are discussed and practical consequences in terms of new monochromator design are presented.
