Abstract

Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) are known for their excellent strain and temperature sensing capability. In this manuscript, application of FBG in weight measurement system is explored and investigated. FBG based optical load cell is designed and tested for the load capacity of upto 5kg. The FBG sensing data is converted in optical power variation using edge filter detection based interrogation technique. Where, the transmission spectra of FBG is smartly used as edge filter and sensing element that makes this system a low cost solution. The system sensitivity is calculated to 99.6mV/kg which is almost twice that of calculated sensitivity of conventional electronic load cell. Hysteresis effect on FBG based optical load cell is also analyzed. Nominal changes in output voltages during loading and unloading process is observed. This suggests that this load cell has low hysteresis error with high repeatability. Thus, the realized optical load cell can be a good substitute for electronic sensor in this capacity range.
