Abstract

Optical vector network analyzer (OVNA) based on optical single-sideband (OSSB) modulation can measure phase and magnitude responses of an optical device with sub-MHz resolution. To reduce the measurement error caused by the high-order sidebands in the OSSB modulation schemes, a theoretical analysis is performed and an OSSB modulation scheme based on 120-degree hybrid coupler is proposed. A novel OVNA is also proposed to enable the OSSB-based OVNA for measuring both the bandstop and bandpass devices. In addition, the OSSB-based OVNA is successfully applied to measure the phase and magnitude responses of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers and a FBG sensor.
