Abstract

Abstract Optical Networks provide potentially huge bandwidth and transparent communication service as well as cost‐effective and future‐proof networking solutions. While the optical networking technology keeps evolving, it is important to re‐evaluate the optical switching techniques available today. In this article, we discuss three optical switching paradigms: wavelength routing, optical burst switching and optical packet switching. As an interim solution for optical networks, the optical burst switching technique is shown to be the most suitable.
