Abstract

Anecdotal accounts of water-filled containers starting fires by focusing sunlight occasionally appear in the popular press, typically as curiosity items. This paper demonstrates the use of optical modeling tools and methodologies to explore situations under which water-filled containers can concentrate sunlight sufficiently to start fires, and proves the existence of a real hazard with an experimental demonstration.
