Abstract
Information about the quality and flow patterns of helium two-phase flow has been obtained by using optical fibres and photo-sensitive devices. Light emitted from a LED is scattered by bubbles and turbulence in liquid helium. As bubbles and turbulence in liquid are related to the quality, x, the measured photo-diode current may include much information concerning the two-phase flow. The change in the photo-diode current was ≈0.18 μA when the quality changed from 0 to ≈1 at a flow rate of m ̇ = 2.27 g cm −2 s −1 . The relationship between the observed flow patterns and measured signals are also included.
