Abstract

When H centres created by KrCl excimer laser irradiation (hv = 5.58 eV) of KI: Na crystals are thermally bleached, two bands exhibiting ⟨110⟩-type dichroism appear at 482 and 580 nm. The two bands are attributable to the H A(Na) centre which is an H centre adjacent to a Na+ ion in KI. The electronic states of the H and H A(Na) centre are discussed together with atomic iodine-iodine distances in these centres and with the trapping of a mobile interstitial iodine atom.
