Abstract

We have detected five (and possibly eight) weak absorption lines in the average of 14 IDS spectra of the quasar 3C 286. These optical lines have a redshift identical to the 21 cm absorption line found by Brown and Roberts at z=692. The observed lines are identified with transition in Mg I, Mg II, and Fe II. The measured equivalent widths are comparable to those along the lines of sight to several stars in the Galaxy as measured by Copernicus, and they are slightly weaker than those found in the z=0.85 system of AO 0235+164. Adopting a typical interstellar spin temperature of 80 K results in relative ion abundances (Mg I/H, Mg II/H, and Fe II/H) comparable to galactic interstellar values. Although no evidence is found for the 2200 A feature associated with galactic dust, these observations are consistent with absorption in an intervening galaxy.
