Abstract

By explicit construction of solutions in gauges satisfying the Lorentz condition we give an operator realization of the dynamically broken Patrascioiu phase in QCD( N) 2 for massless quarks. The SU( N) colour gauge group is reduced to its maximal abelian subgroup. The N − 1 diagonal gluons become massive and there is a massless free U(1) current. The contrast with the 't Hooft phase, established by the 1 N method, supports the idea of two distinct phases.
