Abstract
COMPLETE OPEN DISLOCATION of the knee is a rare injury.1A case of a complete posterior dislocation of the knee associated with a fracture of the medial femoral condyle and complete loss of the skin covering about the knee and leg is reported. The management of this patient demonstrates several important aspects of the treatment of massive soft-tissue wounds and serves to emphasize the importance of a well-functioning quadriceps mechanism to the maintenance of the function and stability of the knee. Report of a Case A 25-year-old male truck driver was admitted to Kings County Hospital Center on December 17, 1960, after being involved in an automobile accident which had caused an obvious posterior dislocation of the leg on the thigh and complete avulsion of the skin from below the tibial tubercle to the supracondylar region of the femur. The first examiner believed that immediate midthigh amputation was indicated.
