Abstract

In this paper we report two on-off intermittency phenomena observed in a gas discharge plasma system. The laminar phase distribution of the intermittencies is studied in various situations. The Poincar\'e bifurcation and another type of bifurcation, namely, ``period-period'' bifurcation, are identified as the underlying system dynamics, respectively. Based on these bifurcations, numerical models are constructed, which basically explain most of the experimental observations. A theoretical discussion is also presented.
