Abstract

635 In selected severe cases of terminal heart failure refractory to standard pharmacological treatment, total artificial heart (TAH) can be used as a bridge to heart transplantation (HT). In our institution, between March 1, 1984 to December 31, 1996 we implanted 25 TAHs in patients who were subsequently transplanted. Prior to July 1, 1994, we implanted 17 Jarvik 7 TAH(Group I) and since then 8 Cardiowest TAH (Group II) in patients who subsequently received HT. TableConclusions: One year survival in patients with TAH support before HT is better with the Cardiowest when compared to the older Jarvik 7 model. In addition, length of hospital stay post-HT is significantly shorter. This experience also illustrates the benefits of careful patient selection, especially at the time of the shortage of organ donors. Further study of the reasons for this improved survival with Cardiowest TAH is necessary.
