Abstract

This chapter describes methods for C C bond formation by addition of carbon electrophiles and nucleophiles to alkenes. The former category includes addition of alkanes, carbocations, and alkenes, as well as hydroformylation, hydroacylation, and hydrocarboxylation. For the addition of nucleophiles to alkenes, emphasis is placed on the spectacular recent advances in asymmetric catalysis, particularly for addition to electron-poor alkenes. These include conjugate addition of stabilized nucleophiles (e.g., malonates) using transition metal catalysts and organocatalysts. For conjugate addition of unstabilized nucleophiles, asymmetric Cu-catalyzed addition of organozincs is discussed, along with Rh-catalyzed addition of boronic acids. Finally, methods for nucleophilic addition to unactivated alkenes are summarized.
