Abstract

We employ a self-consistent reaction field method to explore the validity of the equivalent core approximation in conjunction with a Born-Haber analysis of liquids and solutions. Sample calculations show that the error from the equivalent core approximation is negligible compared to solvation binding energy shifts but that it may not be negligible in comparison with the reorganization contributions to solvation energies derived from a Born-Haber cycle.
