Abstract

AbstractThis paper proposes a method to derive a set of symmetrical and antisymmetric orthogonal shape functions, which can be efficiently used in fluid‐dynamic design optimization. The inverse design of an airfoil in inviscid transonic flow conditions is proposed to demonstrate that a gradient‐based optimization using orthogonal profiles is 6–10 times faster than the same procedure using non‐orthogonal interpolation functions.
