Abstract

The absorption and emission transition moments of coumarin 153 as well as fluorescence lifetimes and quantum yields were measured over a broad range of solvents in which the absorption and emission frequencies varied substantially. The same value was found for both the absorption and emission transition moments, and both also were found to be independent of solvent. These results suggest that a simple two electronic state model for the S 0↔S 1 transition in coumarin 153 is entirely appropriate.
