Abstract
The criteria governing the transition from the conduction regime to the transverse roll regime in a vertical infinite fluid layer are found by means of a power series method. The calculated values are shown to be in agreement with previously published results. Findings concerning the variation of the Gr c and α c with Pr are presented. An anomalous behaviour was found at Pr ⋍ 1.75.
