Abstract

Ten subjects participated in an experiment testing two theoretical notions concerning the modality effect. The productive task used was a classification task, in which the subjects classified previously memorized auditorily presented verbal material or visually presented line figures according to a cue‐word. These two input modes were crossed with three output modes, i.e. knocking, pointing and speaking according to a yes‐no procedure. The dependent variable was classification time and data supported a two‐store notion of the modality effect. A levels‐of‐processing notion was also tested and falsified.
