Abstract

AbstractThe KOHN and ROSTOKER Green's‐function method is generalized to include the presence of surface states in a semi‐infinite three dimensional periodic structure. Only the case in which the unit cell contains one atom is considered. It is shown that two dimensional energy bands of surface states are superimposed on the ordinary three dimensional band structure of the bulk material. Both these systems of energy bands can overlap. No actual numerical calculations are reported in this paper, but the procedure is evidently capable of giving practical results for some given materials, without undue labour.
