Abstract

Abstract This paper is a study on the stability of steady or nonsteady wind-driven, one-layer flows confined in a closed basin of arbitrary shape. The obtained necessary conditions for the instability are consistent with the behavior of shear flows of oceanic western boundary currents. Furthermore they resemble an extension to the geophysical domain of previous criteria stated specifically for the Navier–Stokes equations.
