Abstract

As the satellite is slowed down by the tenuous upper atmosphere, its period is shortened; the greater the energy losses, the greater the shortening of the period. This surprising result is due to the fact that at the vertices of the elliptic path, the loss of potential energy alone is greater than the loss of total energy caused by any single retarding impulse; a retarding impulse at any point of the satellite's path, therefore, produces at some other point of the path a gain of kinetic energy greater than the loss of total energy at the point at which the impulse was received.
