Abstract

Abstract The reliability of the 230 Th- 238 U dating method applied to young volcanic rocks was recently questioned by Capaldi and Pece (1981), on the basis of Th isotopic disequilibria found in historic lava flows from Etna, Vesuvius and Stromboli. In contrast with their results, measurements carried out in our laboratory on lava samples from the same eruptions (Etna and Vesuvius) do not show any Th isotopic disequilibrium between minerals and whole rock. The general validity of this dating method is thus confirmed by our results.
