Abstract

Abstract 1. In a phonological study of Turkish vowels a distinction will have to be made between those occurring in first-syllables and those used in after-syllables. It is only in first-syllables that the vowels have absolute phonological value while in after-syllables they are subject to the laws of vowel harmony and therefore only to a certain extent free for distinctive purposes.
