Abstract

It is shown that the influence of physically active media on the mechanical properties of glassy polymers is related to intramolecular mobility in the polymers. The action of both dilute solutions and highly concentrated liquid media is attributable to a reduction in the surface adsorption energy of a polymer. The possibility of localized plasticization of a polymer at craze apices is largely determined by steric factors.
