Abstract

The natural gas in the Mitsuke area of Niigata Prefecture was discovered in February 1957 with the drilling of well No. SK-3 of the Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. Wells up through No. 9 have been drilled since then and production has reached 12, 000m3 of gas per day and 53kl of oil per day, although gas production is now limited by demand. Exploration in this area was first begun in 1952 with a gravity survey. The structure was confirmed by two seismic surveys after which trial drilling led to successful production. This structure is asymetrical with the east wing sloping sharply while that of the west slopes gently. The present oil and gas producing area stretches over about 1km from north to south and 600m from west to east. The oil and gas producing strata are from the 1, 100 to 1, 200m level in the Shiiya formation and the Oguriyama Tuff in the lower part of the Teradomari formation. In the future, it is planned to study swelling nature of the strata 1, 100 to 1, 200m below the surface and to investigate the horizontal and vertical extent of the Oguriyama Tuff with the aim being to increase oil and gas producing area.
