Abstract

AbstractThis article presents a simple design expression to calculate resonant frequency (fr) of a four‐layered circular microstrip patch. The resonant frequencies calculated by present method are in good agreement with the calculated value by FDTD method. The average % deviation for circular microstrip patch (CMP) with and without cover is 0.4 and 0.56%, respectively. The average % deviation against FDTD method for composite and suspended CMP is 0.5 and 0.61%, respectively. The change in fr for composite/suspended CMP decreases as the height of the cover increases. The average and maximum % deviation for intentional or unintentional spaced dielectric is 0.43 and 0.85%, respectively upto ratio of h4/h3 = 14. The intentional or unintentional air‐gap brings down the fr of CMP. As air‐gap increases, the fr tends towards the fr of CMP. Spaced dielectric effect on fr is more for small air‐gap. The effect of loaded ice or superstrate on covered CMP further lowers down the resonant frequency. Its effect is more on fr for small h4/h3 ratio. The incremental % change due to loaded superstrate on covered CMP is less than 0.4% and average % deviation against FDTD method is 0.89%. This expression is suitable for computer aided design. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
