Abstract

A survey is given of problems encountered in the conservation of Tibetan painted banners. Deterioration of the binding medium can be treated with polyvinyl acetate solutions, but a thang-ka should not be glossy. Methods of reinforcing the fabric of the painting are described. Original borders should be saved and inscriptions on the back should be left exposed.
