Abstract
1. A case of unusually severe atrophic ulcerative gastritis is presented in which suction biopsy sections were not in agreement with the gross gastroscopic findings. A spontaneously eliminated piece of gastric mucosa, however, revealed a microscopic picture in conformity with the gross gastroscopic picture. 2. Suction biopsy sections, though often clinically valuable, should be used for research purposes with great reservation only, even if multiple biopsies are taken. The pieces are too small to permit cogent conclusions as to the structure of the gastric mucosa as a whole. Since the specimens are taken blindly it is impossible to be sure that the biopsy is taken from the diseased area.
