Abstract
The semi-classical expressions for the radial integrals of bound-bound, bound-free and free-free dipole transitions in a non-hydrogenic atom or positive ion are obtained. Their region of validity is restricted to the Coulomb approximation and an approximation analogous to that made by Kramers (Zω/;|E| 3 2 ⪢1) . The well-known Kramers formula for the bremsstrahlung cross section in the pure Coulomb potential is generalized to the case when a short-range potential is added. Comparisons are made with more exact calculations.
