Abstract

In the present work, a numerical simulation model for conical journal bearing system considering roughness features in the analysis is investigated. In present model, non-newtonian behaviour of MR fluid is expressed using Hershel-Bulkley model and an Asymmetrical Sigmoidal function has been used for shear yield stress relation of MR lubricant. Finally, the governing equations are solved using Finite Element Analysis and Newton-Raphson method. The results obtained corresponding to distinct performance indices indicates that isotropic and longitudinal roughness on journal bearing surfaces operated with MR lubricant improves the bearing performance but at the cost of frictional power loss. The outcome of these results may inspire practising designers for development of better tribo-components.
