Abstract
Contrary to our conceit of immutable scientific truth, psychoanalysis, imbedded in its time and place, changes inexorably and largely out of awareness as the socio-cultural paradigms change. We are now entering a period of extreme inversion of our previous assumptions about the mind-body relationship; a virtual cartesian revolution that powerfully influences the nature of current psychoanalytic treatment. This is seen most clearly in our valorization of mind over body, particularly in gender issues. We are converging with the paradigmatic Artificial Intelligence view that bodies are fungible and irrelevant to mental functioning. How this changes our unconscious perception of therapist, patient and therapeutic process will be explored.
