Abstract
Abstract This paper concerns the field of developing mechatronic systems and refers to a learning and application example termed vehicle convoy control. The safety of a mechanically or informationally coupled pair of vehicles is the essential subject during the phase of development. A safety-related analysis and current safety concepts are explained. To enhance operational safety during test rides, the EDR concept for model-based emergency detection with PI-observers and subsequent emergency reaction in form of vehicle separation is discussed and exemplified for sensor failures.
