On Receiving IEEJ Industry Applications Society Technical Development Award

It is amazing how fast the human brain can process multiple streams of thought. “Will you accept the position of editor-in-chief of IEEE Industry Applications Magazine?” When this question was posed to me, I thought about the multiple responsibilities that this would entail. The members of the Industry Applications Society (IAS) are responsible for assuring highquality and timely publication of the peer-reviewed technical journal and the IEEE and Society activities news that lie between the front and back covers of each issue.

What about the many conferences sponsored each year by the IAS and its Technical Committees? How do we make IAS and/or joint society memberships and participation more accessible? What should be done to take maximum advantage of electronic means for information transfer? Are there additional industries which miglht be included within Society operations? How do we best encourage joint endeavors with other IEEE and non-IEEE Societies on a1 global basis? What might be the best ways to involve students and young engineers in our Society? The list of questions appears endless. To address a significant portion of these questions, and do it right, will take a large amount of time and energy from many dedicated volunteers. My hope is that we will be able to make some real progress in at least a few of tlhese areas during the next year.
