Abstract
Direct numerical simulations of the flow past stationary and oscillating cylinders have been performed at a moderate range of Reynolds numbers. We compute the pressure, integrate it over the surface, and obtain the lift and drag forces for the two cases. Higherorder spectral analysis are performed on the fluctuating hydrodynamic forces to investigate the nonlinear interaction between the forces. We observe quadratic coupling between the lift and drag forces and their phase relationship. We identify additional modes present due to this quadratic nonlinear interaction and the energy associated with these modes.
