Abstract

An on-line optimal control strategy has been implemented and applied to a continuous culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for ethanol production. The carbon dioxide evolution rate is on-line determined by measuring the oxygen and carbon dioxide in the inlet and outlet of the fermenter. By using the dilution rate and the carbon dioxide evolution rate as the input and output, respectively, an identified model is obtained for control system design. Optimal control with a quadratic performance index is then carried out. Better utilization of substrate is obtained by using the optimal control.
