Abstract
While elastic analysis remains the cornerstone of standard design techniques for space structures under service conditions, performance based procedures could further enhance their effectiveness up to prescribed target limits. Performance-based plastic design appears to be the quintessential method of design for space structures composed of flexural members, such as steel and reinforced concrete grillages, interconnected vierendeel girders, moment frames, etc. The current contribution presents a general technique for the estimation of maximum plastic displacements of twistless, orthotropic grillages of regular formation with any combination of boundary support conditions, along the sides of a parallelogram, and subjected to monotonically increasing distribution of continuous normal nodal forces.
