Abstract
This note provides a framework for most of the articles that follow. The subtext of discussion, and empirical analyses of elections and media, concerns democracy in its various manifestations as practice, process, and value. Chua sees ‘democracy’ as the pivotal term in post‐cold war global hegemony. All participate; even the ‘failures’, and perhaps especially the ‘failures’ expose the meanings of democracy today, and thus the premise upon which the role of media and elections is based.
